For a second consecutive year the Coast Guard has ordered an expanded 15-knot (17mph) speed limit for large areas of Biscayne Bay on July 4th. The temporary slow speed zone includes the areas between Turkey Point and the Julia Tuttle Causeway. This safety measure is a direct result from multiple July 4th boat accidents including the deadly accident in 2014 where four people died in a collision near Dinner Key in Coconut Grove. The slow speed zone will be in effect from 7 p.m. until 11:59 p.m. The Coast Guard along with Florida and local law enforcement agencies will have an increased presence during the period to ensure boater safety while transiting the bay during night hours.
